If you mix that with the unorthodox level design, this game is ruthless, especially if you're almost at the end. You get shown your score and get brought back to the title screen where you have to start all over. This is a game where if you die once, it's 100% game over. Sure, the levels are annoying, but I can get better at them, right? And the visuals are murky, but that's not a huge deal, right? Well, that would be the case if the game wasn't so cryptic. All of this wouldn't be too bad on their own. There's a lot of green and dark colors that make the game look almost lifeless, and while, again, they aren't visually bad, there's no sense of charm or liveliness you got with any Sonic game beforehand.

For some reason, this game first takes place in a big sewer, and it's just not pleasant to look at. The aesthetic, despite being well detailed, just doesn't look that good to me. And the worst part is the fact that the enemies respawn every time you get back to that point, so there's not much in terms of progression. Whether it be tediously having to knock out barrels or weird worm faces or birds, doing this over and over with wonky physics is a pain. The levels, despite having variety, are more annoying than they are fun. The physics in this game are awkward, as you never really have control as to where sonic will land when the paddles hit him. That's about it in terms of pros, as everything else is either meh or simply bad. The amount of variety in this game is pretty staggering, as well, so there's rarely ever a dull moment in terms of visuals and mechanics. The music is bumpin', as it's catchy and just well composed. The presentation is top notch, as everything is detailed, colorful, and bursting with its own identity. Before we get into why I felt this way, I want to go over what this game has going for it. And then, I played it, and was incredibly confused and disappointed. It seemed like something that would go perfectly hand in hand. So, when I heard about this game, I was excited.

You probably won't get anything that re-compiles well though, not without some hand-tweaking. This is really nice for working out hacks or optimizations. It has a feature that disassembles 68K CPU code as it runs. This is the product of a lot of time and effort by the community.ДЄ tool I used a lot was the Exodus emulator by Nemesis. I know that the main sonic games have disassembled source code that can be compiled 1:1 with the original ROM, and also include labels and comments. There are some really nice Genesis disassembles out there. You don't just put a game ROM in a decompiler program and get out nice readable C code, even if it was programmed in C originally.

I've done some disassembly when working on Genesis game hacks. I don't mean to dissuade you, but totally de-compiling a game from scratch is a hell of a task. I want to make something that can run on real (and preferably un-modded) hardware. The game was built almost entirely in C, so it can be decompiled and recompiled.ДЄs for the whole Emulator / MiSTer thing. A 32x or MCD port would be really cool, but quite a challenge. You'll also have to spend some time re-doing sprites for this mode. You'll get more screen real estate, but with uglier graphics. I don't think hacking the game for interlaced mode would be worth it. I can't remember all the tricks, but you can do things like replace certain MUL/DIV instructions with LSL/LSR. It would be interesting to have a faster spinball. I know I spent some time with Barone on the subject at one point. I think there are some old threads on this forum about optimizing games. Third Question: Would you want to play a 32X and/or Mega CD version, if it were to be developed? Second Question: Would you prefer 224/240 lines, or interlaced for 448/480 lines?
